This Is England - Dir: Shane MeadowsThis Is England - Dir: Shane Meadows
'This is... actually quite harrowing.'
The Last King Of Scotland - Dir: Kevin McDonaldThe Last King Of Scotland - Dir: Kevin McDonald
'There was just no possible way this was going to be ‘Bambi Goes to Africa’.'
The Prestige - Dir: Christopher NolanThe Prestige - Dir: Christopher Nolan
'The climax of the film features twist after twist, and the shocking final scene along with the tantalisingly half-tied-up conclusions leave plenty for consideration afterwards. This lack of complete closure is by no means a flaw, more, as Borden says, it is the secret that keeps our interest; the truth would spoil the illusion.'
Film Review Round-Up - Richard Linklater, Pedro Almodovar & Jonathan Dayton & Valerie FarisFilm Review Round-Up - Richard Linklater, Pedro Almodovar & Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris
'Leaving the cinema, I asked myself a few questions; Did I know what had just happened? Not really. Could I explain the plot coherently if required? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Hell yes!'
Grizzly Man - Writer/Director ? Werner HerzogGrizzly Man - Writer/Director ? Werner Herzog
'Grizzly Man is an absorbing and intriguing allegory on the incompatibility of mentally unbalanced boys and big hungry bears. Hopefully in ten years time I?ll be watching something similar on the fate of Steve Irwin'
Everything Is Illuminated - Director ? Liev Schreiber
'An introspective story of remembrance and roots, Everything Is Illuminated is well-judged, managing to balance humour and brutal reality. Hugely enjoyable, thought-provoking and touching; I can?t wait for the next offering from Mr Schreiber'
V For Vendetta - Director: James McTeigue
'We could go on eternally about the political points raised by this movie, how our civil liberties are being dissolved by a government who hold us captive with fear, how we label those who dare to stand up as terrorists without considering the reasons behind their actions. We could raise indignant voices about the disrespect this film has for the sensibilities of the British establishment. Or we could sit back and watch a fantastic film without reading too much into it. Personally I?d prefer the latter.'
Thumbsucker - Director ? Mike Mills
'I liked the film, but I?m not entirely sure why. It seems lacking in something, but contained enough to keep me trying to make sense of it long after I?d left the cinema. It might be that Dr Lyman?s self-help spiel provides the key to understanding this film, or to quote him, it might be that the trick is living without an answer. I think.'
Factotum - Director ? Bent Hamer
'Factotum is a worthwhile film; darkly comic, perceptive and enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with Charles Bukowski and his work'
Match Point - Director: Woody Allen
'As for the key line ?I?d rather be lucky than good? - with Match Point, Woody Allen is neither. Better luck next time'
